Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 - Come on in to Fairtrade!
Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 runs from Monday 25 February – Sunday10 March 2019
For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid.
This year we are focusing on the people – in particular the women – who grow the cocoa in the chocolate we love so much.
She Deserves £1.86
£1.86* is the amount a cocoa farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day in order to achieve a living income. Currently, a typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire lives on around 74p** a day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty.
For the women the situation is even worse. They may plant and harvest on the farm, look after children, carry water, collect wood, cook and clean for the family, and transport the cocoa beans to market but often with fewer rights than men.
This is why we at Fairtrade are campaigning for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa. If we can work together with governments, chocolate companies and retailers to make the commitments and policies necessary, then we can make it happen.
*WIP estimation based on the Living Income Community of Practice
**This is the estimated daily income per household member based on a typical cocoa farming household.

Friday 1st March - Visit from Rosine Bekoine from the CAYAT cooperative
We are delighted and honoured to have Rosine Bekoine from the CAYAT cooperative in Ivory Coast as our guest.
Rosine is featured on the first of our "She Deserves Fairtrade" posters above.
Rosine is a mum of five, cocoa farmer and member of CAYAT co-operative in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast, West Africa).
Rosine is slightly unusual as cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire go – because she owns and runs her 2.5-hectare farm, which was passed to her from her mother. Normally it is men who own farms and earn the income from them.
Rosine used to sell her cocoa to local middlemen (pisteurs), who come to buy cocoa from individual farms at harvest time. But it was difficult to get close to a decent income working and trading in that way. A nearby co-operative, CAYAT, held a meeting about Fairtrade in Rosine’s village, which convinced her that uniting with other farmers would actually make her more autonomous and independent.
Rosine says "I’ve seen that Fairtrade has helped us a lot in cocoa farming. The Fairtrade Premium has enabled us to do many thing, especially women. It has enabled us to advance our children, and also we use the Fairtrade Premium to build for the future."
During her visit, Rosine will be at Holy Cross Sixth Form College in the morning holding a Q&A session with students and visitors, followed by a visit to Valley Community Primary School in the afternoon.
