Surprise visitor at Fairtrade Fair
The High Sherriff of Greater Manchester, George Almond and his wife paid a surprise visit to Bury’s First Fairtrade Market, at Bury Met, on Saturday 2 March, when they joined the mayor of Bury, Councillor Joan Grimshaw and her consort, Mr Paul Grimshaw, who had kindly agreed to open the event.
The mayor spoke passionately about the value of Fairtrade in improving the lives of farmers and their families throughout the developing world, and welcomed stallholders and patrons to one of the local highlights of Fairtrade Fortnight 2013.
The distinguished guests were treated to a short concert by Bury Acapeelers while another local choir, Inspire Community Voices, entertained shoppers later in the day. This was their debut performance, but they handled the nerves well.
The music continued till late, with a well received evening concert of World Music featuring three well known local bands, the Beating Wing Orchestra, Satellite State Disko and Heritage Survival.
